Is Recovery-as-a-Service (RaaS) still a “Killer” Cloud App?

Once hailed as a killer app and now simply recognized as a vital tool in the world of cloud computing, Recovery-as-a-Service (RaaS) is becoming one of the most important weapons in a SMB or larger enterprise contemplating back-up & recovery services in the cloud.

According to ComputerWorld, By 2014, almost one in three midsize businesses will be using a recovery-as-a-service (RaaS) with the ability to backup and restore virtual machines (VMs).

Gartner Inc describes RaaS in the following manner:

RaaS describes the managed replication of virtual machines (VMs) and production data in a service-provider’s cloud, together with the means to activate the VMs to support either recovery testing or actual recovery operations. The location of the data center equipment, the party housing the provider’s cloud equipment, and the price vary by provider.

According to Gartner, midsize companies using RaaS at present, two camps are forming. The first is using server virtualization recovery features and SAN-based replication to deploy in-house disaster recovery solutions for some applications. The second is implementing initial pilots for the use of cloud services as an alternative to more traditional disaster recovery resources.

The benefits of cloud-based DR, said Data Center Knowledge, encompass these three broad areas:

  • The cloud’s pay-as-you go pricing model significantly lowers costs due to the different level of resources required before and during a disaster.
  • Cloud resources can quickly be added with fine granularity and have costs that scale smoothly without requiring large upfront investments.
  • The cloud platform manages and maintains the DR servers and storage devices, lowering IT costs and reducing the impact of failures at the disaster site.

The ongoing developments in RaaS point to the growing sophistication in cloud services as web hosting providers such as Virtual Internet add new DR options to their existing virtualization platforms.
