Most businesses tend to invest in cloud computing to streamline procedures and to cut IT costs, but are these the only benefits? Well new figures released by Google also show that cloud computing can help dramatically lower energy usage and cut carbon emissions.
According to Google, an average sized company can lower its energy usage by 65% – 85% by switching to cloud based solutions. According to Urs Hoelzle, Google’s senior vice president for technical infrastructure, this is because most companies have more servers than they need and so end up wasting energy and being inefficient.
Meanwhile, cloud computing is designed to minimize energy output and make the most of the space available, being much more efficient. Therefore, switching from traditional servers to cloud based solutions can save energy and therefore carbon emissions as well as obviously reducing costs.
In terms of how much a company can actually save, Google claim that the U.S. General Service Administration (GSA) was able to cut its annual energy bill by $285,000 by switching to cloud based apps and reducing server energy use by nearly 90% as well as reducing carbon emissions by 85%.
This seems to further strengthen the argument for cloud based solutions, as it can not only streamline IT processes but can dramatically cut costs and help reduce carbon emissions, which can help save the world!
